THE IDENTIFICATION OF DIAMOND

Since this is not an academic treatise but a practical guide for a jeweller-gemmologist, the order in which the individual stone are dealt with is roughly based on their commercial importance.

Diamond Quite clearly precedence to over any other, followed by ruby, sapphire and emerald, these four being the classical 'precious stone' in the days when all others (except pearl) were relegated to the ' semiprecious' ranks.

Thereafter the order of the chapters becomes less predictable, but if the reader fails to find the stone in which he is interested quickly he has only to consult the index.
Diamond accounts for over 90 per cent by value of the world's trade in gems, and is one of the few stones that every jewellers handles and hopes to be able to recognise at sight when tolerable certainty.
There have been many cases, however, when even experienced dealers have made costly (and humiliating) mistakes-very often because their suspicion have not been aroused.

In recent years things have certainly been made more difficult by the production of synthetically-made substitutes showing fire, brilliance and luster very closed to those seen in diamond itself.
