.Bangui, Central African Republic--A three-day mourning period continues in the Central African Republic following the deadly collapse of a gold mine reportedly once shuttered due to safety concerns. According to a Reuters report, the collapse happened Sunday at a mine about 273 miles east of the capital city of Bangui. A pit in which the miners were working caved in following heavy rains. A government spokesman said that the death toll of 37 was “provisional,” as there are a number of injuries and an unknown number of bodies that remain buried. A spokesman for the Seleka rebel movement, which is now in control of the country’s government, told the Associated Press that mining at the site had been banned following a landslide that killed 16 miners in 2009. Poverty, however, had driven locals to resume digging. Prior to Sunday’s collapse, it was the Central African Republic’s diamond mining sector that was making news.
The Kimberley Process suspended the country in late May due to reports that the rebels who seized control of the country from former President François Bozizé were using diamond proceeds to fund their activities.
The suspension means the diamond industry needs to avoid trading in rough from the Central African Republic. The Central African Republic also is one of the African nations included in the “conflict” minerals provision of the Dodd-Frank Act. The act dictates that public companies that use gold must exercise due diligence to determine if any of their gold is sourced from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where proceeds from mining activities are being used to fund violent rebel groups, or one of nine neighboring countries. The Central African Republic directly borders the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the north.
